01.31.07 thequest UPdate

thequest family,

I had the opportunity to be with 350+ church planters and house church leaders at the "Organic Church Movements Conference." It was awesome. I don't have time to write anything precise right now, so I won't ramble on here. More is coming.

I did want to take the opportunity to praise God. I also want to applaud our spiritual family and the steps of a disciple of Jesus in our spiritual family named David. I got the following letter from him and asked permission to pass it on to you:

1/23/2007

Today is my fifty-sixth birthday. I want to express my gratitude to the Lord for giving me another year to live. I also want to express my gratitude to you in the quest whose e-mail addresses I have.

Most if not all of you know I was a patient in a psychiatric hospital for years before I began living where I now live in Columbus. Reflecting on my life since then, I have to say that the single most important and significant and positive thing I have done in the almost five years since being released has been to stop and talk with Strat and Gena at thequest booth at Comfest in 2002 and out of that get involved with thequest and all of you. So much good has come from that I can't truly express it.

I am truly grateful to all of you in the quest for your involvement in my life.
I just wanted to share this with you. May our Lord continue to bless all of you.David

I hope you are as encouraged as I am by this email. It is that "unasked for feedback" that says we are connecting people to Jesus through an embracing community. That's what we are about. Praise Jesus!

Press on,
Mike

01.17.07 thequest UPdate

thequest family,

In hanging out with some friends from Chicago this weekend, we spent some time with God. It was a sweet time. The Lord showed me something that I hadn't seen before.

I was reading along and the passage was talking about the struggle between sin and doing the right thing. It was even so bold as to say

"The one who does what is sinful is of the devil..."

Right there I am thinking...wow...I'm miserable. I'm in real trouble. Fortunately the context doesn't leave that as the conclusion.

"The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. Those who are born of God will not continue to sin..."

I am ready to give Jesus a High-5 and say thank you right there. Jesus is destroying the destroyer...a very ironic and comforting statement.

I'm always asking the question "How?" So I asked it...and the passage goes on...

"Those who are born of God will not continue to sin, because God's seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God." *

Then like an unexpected firework, it exploded in my mind--God planted a seed of HIMSELF in us. That seed, like all seeds, starts small. But seeds grow and grow and mature and expand into what they are meant to be. God Himself plants Himself in us. And His presence in our life grows and pushes out the sin of our life.

Those born of God--that is having His Life--are described as having the seed of God in them.

Take great comfort if you are a follower of Jesus, that God has implanted Himself in YOU. May His presence and impact in your life grow every day till we see him face to face!

Press on,
Mike

Reading about Starfish and Spiders...

At the suggestion of my friend and mentor Neil Cole, I've been reading The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations. It's been good reading. Eye-opening stories and good principles for us in thequest community. I highly encourage it.

Here is the Book Jacket Summary
If you cut off a spider’s head, it dies; if you cut off a starfish’s leg it grows a new one, and that leg can grow into an entirely new starfish. Traditional top-down organizations are like spiders, but now starfish organizations are changing the face of business and the world.

What’s the hidden power behind the success of Wikipedia, craigslist, and Skype? What do eBay and General Electric have in common with the abolitionist and women’s rights movements? What fundamental choice put General Motors and Toyota on vastly different paths? After five years of ground-breaking research Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstrom have discovered some unexpected answers, gripping stories, and a tapestry of unlikely connections. The Starfish and the Spider argues that organizations fall into two categories: traditional “spiders,” which have a rigid hierarchy and top-down leadership, and revolutionary “starfish,” which rely on the power of peer relationships.

The Starfish and the Spider explores what happens when starfish take on spiders (such as the music industry vs. Napster, Kazaa, and the P2P services that followed). It reveals how established companies and institutions, from IBM to Intuit to the US government, are also learning how to incorporate starfish principles to achieve success. And it will teach you: • How the Apaches evaded the powerful Spanish army for 200 years • The power of a simple circle • The importance of catalysts who have an uncanny ability to bring people together. • How the Internet has become a breeding ground for leaderless organizations • How Alcoholics Anonymous has reached TK million members with only a shared ideology and without a leader
The Starfish and the Spider is the rare book that will change how you understand the world around you. You’ll never see things the same way again.

Follow the Leader, or Think Like a Starfish?
Monday, January 1, 2007; Page A11 Washington Post

"The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations" describes the oft-overlooked reason Skype, Craigslist and al-Qaeda have prospered under assault from the seemingly more powerful.

The book's authors, high-tech entrepreneurs Rod A. Beckstrom and Ori Brafman, say these groups' decentralized structure makes them more nimble, whether in the marketplace or on the battlefield. User-driven, they distribute decision making among all members, who do not need word from headquarters to function. If a portion of the organization is defeated, the whole survives and recovers, as a starfish regrows an arm if it is severed.... The rest of Follow the Leader, or Think Like a Starfish? HERE

Ten Questions to find out if you have a Starfish Organization: (pg 46-53)

1) Is there a person in charge?

2) Are there headquarters?

3) If you thump it on the head, will it die?

4) Is there a clear division of roles?

5) If you take out a unit, is the organization harmed?

6) Are knowledge and power concentrated or distributed?

7) Is the organization rigid or flexible?

8) Can you count the employees or participants?

9) Are working groups funding by the organization, or are they self-funded?

10) Do working groups communicate directly or through intermediaries?

Eight Principles of Decentralization sprinkled through Starfish & the Spider:

1) When attacked, a decentralized organization tends to become even more open and decentralized. (p 21)

2) It’s easy to mistake starfish for spiders. (p 36)

3) An open system doesn’t have central intelligence; the intelligence is spread throughout the system. (p 39)

4) Open systems easily mutate. (p 40)

5) The decentralized organization sneaks up on you. (p 41)

6) As industries become decentralized, overall profits decrease. (p 45)

7) Put people into an open system and they’ll automatically want to contribute. (p 74)

8) When attacked, a centralized organization tends to become even more centralized. (p 139)

01.10.07 thequest UPdate

thequest family,

I've been musing this week about this verse.

"Those who remain in me [Jesus], and I in them, will produce much fruit."
John 15:1-8 NLT

I was thinking about the incredible creativity of God. Fruit was His idea. It tastes good and has the seeds of the next generation of life embedded.

God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: plants yielding seeds according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds.” It was so. The land produced vegetation – plants yielding seeds according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:11-12 NET Bible

Plants produce seeds for propagation. Trees bear fruit--with seeds--for the next round of trees to be "born." It's the way things are.

Similarly, Jesus compares our relationship to Him to the natural order. Disciples of Jesus--who remain connected to him produce fruit.

Many of you are scratching your head saying, "Duh Mike." For me it was a simple and profound insight. Something I probably knew but stepped into an better understanding of. I hope it encourages you...

"Those who remain in me [Jesus], and I in them, will produce much fruit."

Opinions Expressed on House Churches

The following was posted to Terry White's FGBC WORLD blog:

The opinions of several Grace Brethren pastors on the subject of "house churches" are quoted in this article from the Dayton (OH) Daily News, written this past week by Brian Orme of the pastoral staff of the West Milton church.

'Revolutionaries' find refuge in home churches
By Brian Orme

There's a new movement, a shift in the landscape of the church, says George Barna, the director of the Ventura, Calif.-based Barna Research Group. In Barna's studies one thing seems clear: In today's culture many people are leaving the traditional church to practice their faith in alternative venues... Read the rest HERE

Also I made a comment to that blog entry. You can see it in context here. Or as an isolated comment here
I also wanted to paste it here be

"I think ...[the] comment in the article about having a "network of small groups centered around a larger congregational entity can cover that entire grid far better than any single house church" is recognized and practiced by many house churches.

A majority of the house churches that I am familar with are connected to a "network" for that very reason--not that they aren't a church--but that local churches ought to be interdependent with other local churches. These house churches know they need to work together for discipleship, mission and the like.

The idea that each individual house church is an island to itself is something to be worked through. The idea of an "independent church" whether a house church expression or any expression is an oxymoron.

The Church is connected--believers and local bodies (e.g., Eph 4:16; Col 2:19)! That is why churches of all expressions have associations, fellowships, etc.

Let's keep listening, learning, and conversing.

01.04.07 thequest UPdate

thequest family,

Welcome to the Two Thousand and Seventh Year of our Lord. As you can see we even orient our calendars around Jesus. It is all about Jesus!

Well that was our theme for last year and as we step in to 2007 our theme is:

Branching Out

You probably already noticed it in the picture header for the email. This theme comes from this picture of our connection to the Vine--Jesus. Check out the picture Jesus paints here:

"I [Jesus] am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you.

Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. "Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.

Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.
John 15:1-8 NLT

We want to be those true disciples of Jesus. Not half-hearted followers, or part-timers, but those who are truly devoted to Him. Our connection with Him gives us the power, energy and strength to produce any fruit at all. Our sap has to be exchanged with His to bring about the fruit He desires.

To be honest this will take a lot more than a year for us to do! But we can make it an emphasis for the whole year! And that's the plan, to connect to the Vine and see what He does in and through us!

Press on,
Mike
